The AFB-net brings together industry representatives from 14 European Union countries in a 'whole chain' approach to stimulate the commercial and industrial exploitation of biomass energy in Europe. Established in January 1995, the network is managed by ETSU (1995 - 1998) and VTT Energy (1999-2000) and is supported by the Directorate-General for Transport and Energy (DG TREN) of the European Commission under its ALTENER Programme. Co-ordinated by VTT Energy there are national co-ordinators in 13 other countries with good links to their national industries.
